CATE 2027 Session Strands

Here are the strands/topics for presentations.

  1. Literacy Resources: In this strand, we invite presenters, especially those familiar with current information about literacy resources in California, to create a session to help inform K-12 English language arts teachers.
  2. Reading Development: In this strand, we invite presenters who have particular expertise in reading development. For example, presenters can have special interest or commentary on the varying, and/or conflicting approaches to developing readers of all levels.
  3. Writing Development: In this strand, we invite presenters whose strategies and intentional pedagogical decisions uncover, nourish, and develop students’ authentic voices, with the particular lens to how their identities and experiences impact their writing.
  4. English Language Arts for Elementary Grades K-6: It is in the interest of CATE to make intentional invitations for more teachers of younger students at our conventions. We aim to have more elementary teachers and participants at this and all future conventions. These presenters will share methods and strategies especially relevant to elementary learners.
  5. Teaching Multilingual Learners: In this strand, we are looking for presenters who can share methods or strategies that help Multilingual Learners survive and thrive in the classroom and beyond.
  6. ERWC (Expository Reading and Writing Course): In this strand, we are looking for presenters who are experienced ERWC teachers or trainers, who want to present additional help to ERWC teachers who are eager to expand their knowledge of how to teach ERWC. Sessions can also be geared toward untrained teachers who want to know more about the strategies used in ERWC.
  7. Integrated Curriculum: In the effort to weave ELA with other subjects, we’re looking for teaching ideas that blend ELA with other disciplines (e.g., math, social science, computer science, technology and science). This strand is open to teachers of other subjects who integrate reading and writing skills into their curriculum. Other examples would be presenters who have adapted PBL within the advent of STEM, STEAM, CTE or other various educational pathways.
  8. Social Emotional Learning Strategies: In this strand, we are looking for presenters focusing on educator and student well-being that challenges superficial practices aimed at regulating behavior.
  9. Tools of the Trade: In this strand, we are looking for presenters who can share methods and strategies for creating an equitable classroom culture. These could include, but are not limited to, classroom management, curriculum/lesson planning, classroom hacks, grading, etc.
  10. No Specific Strand: It is not necessary to be a part of a strand. Don’t force your session into a strand if it doesn’t fit any of the descriptions above. We are open to presentations about a variety of issues or subjects that apply to teachers of English Language Arts.
